According to the China Institute of Metrology, the NIM-3A #002 Absolute Gravimeter, independently developed by the Institute, has passed inspection and acceptance by specialists and was delivered to the Institute of Geology, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences.
The absolute gravimeter is a high-precision instrument for measuring the acceleration of gravity. Previously, only a few countries such as the United States had R&D and manufacturing capabilities. In order to break this technological bottleneck, the Chinese Institute of Metrology launched the development of the NIM Absolute Gravimeter since 1970 and successfully developed the NIM-1, NIM-2, and NIM-3 Absolute Gravimeters. The IM-3A Absolute The gravity meter was approved by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) as a "governed acceleration (absolute method) calibration social public measurement standard device". China Metrology Institute is currently one of the few institutions in the world that has independently developed absolute gravimeter technology.
In March 2013, the China Metrology Institute was officially approved as the 2017 Global Absolute Gravimeter at the 14th International Metrology Committee-Quality and Related Quantity Consultation Committee (CIPM-CCM) meeting held at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Paris (BIPM), France. The key comparison (ICAG-2017) host site marks the international recognition of China's absolute gravimeter R&D technology.
The new absolute gravimeter developed this time will serve the Chinese Continental Scientific Drilling Project (CCSD) and will be calibrated on a regular basis to ensure the accuracy and traceability of its measurement data.
