This paper briefly introduces the status of research on the stability of tailings dams at home and abroad, and introduces the project overview and on-site investigation of the beneficiation process of the Jinyedian iron ore tailings dam of Jinshandian Iron and Steel Co., Ltd., and conducts a detailed inspection of its operating conditions. The related theory of stability calculation of tailings dam includes limit equilibrium method, numerical simulation method, uncertain method and so on. According to the tailing dam geological exploration report, five calculated profiles were selected to determine the relevant material parameters. The GEO-SLOPE software, which is widely used in geotechnical engineering, was used as a tool for three elevations of 60m, 75m, and 100m. The stability is analyzed and calculated, the potential slip plane is obtained, the small safety factor is calculated, and the current and future safety conditions of the tailing dam are mastered. On this basis, specific reinforcement measures and preliminary height-increasing expansion plans are proposed. The tailings dam was monitored for one year's displacement, and the displacement of the dam body was analyzed based on the previous monitoring results. The stress and displacement of the dam body were analyzed using the finite element software SIGMA. The calculated results were in good agreement with the actual monitoring results.
