The insiders knew that the engine must be an expensive import." One day in mid-July, in the Yuchai Engineering Research Institute, deputy chief engineer Dr. Feng Jing told reporters that nowadays, diesel vehicles with “tails cut off” are visible at any time in the city. Insiders also know that the “heart” in the car already exists. Made in China, even if it is "foreign manufactured," prices are no longer "high above."

Participate in bidding for the reception car in the Beijing Olympic Games. This is a story that makes Yuchai people proud. At the time of the first tender, Yuchai was the only domestic diesel engine manufacturer to successfully bid. In the third tender, it won a grand victory and beat all imported brands, and all orders were put into the bag.

Frozen feet, not a cold day. According to Yuchai’s statistics, in 2005, engine products using this technology were put into the market. By 2010, the annual sales of these engines have exceeded 500,000 units. Calculated according to this amount of use, due to the adoption of energy-saving and environmentally-friendly technologies, the annual carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by more than 2.51 million tons, equivalent to the planting of 150 million trees and saving 800,000 tons of fuel.

According to the project’s first person in charge and Yuchai’s chief engineer, Shen Jie, in 2003, Yuchai started the project to fill the gap in the product line with no medium-heavy engine and planned to implement a “green ideal” for energy conservation and environmental protection. That is to say, low-energy, low-emission, and high-efficiency engines will be introduced to the international advanced level.

How far is the gap between ideals and reality? "Technical gap of 8 to 10 years." Shen Jie said that at the time there was no concept of diesel emission control in the country, and electronically controlled high-pressure injection technology was not used.

Today, driven by Yuchai, the overall level of the domestic industry has been improved: the four-valve structure adopted first in design has become the industry's standard technology configuration; combustion and emission control technologies have basically reached the international advanced level, and the gap with the most advanced technology is only 1 year; In the post-processing control technology of gas, it has begun to compete with multinational companies for market; electronic control technology also breaks the monopoly of foreign suppliers.

During this period, Yuchai developed into the most complete internal combustion engine manufacturing base with a domestic product spectrum, and its total assets exceeded RMB 30 billion. More than 100 technicians who participated in the project were trained on the platform of “not eager for quick success, being willing to invest, and trusting technicians”. General technicians have grown into technical experts.
