The moon may not be as round as you think

We may think that we have a good understanding of the Moon, the celestial body closest to us, but it still maintains various secrets. We always thought it was round, but the recent discovery gave a different, in fact, it's shaped like a lemon.

The new study, published this week in the journal Nature, reveals that the Moon is not a ball, more like an oblate ball with a distinct mass. One of the newly discovered researchers, Ian Garrick Bessel, claimed that this is actually very difficult to describe. Imagine a balloon full of water spinning around its axis and rotating it to make it slightly flat. The measurement needed for this discovery uses a laser altimeter to draw a detailed map of the lunar surface, which has never been seen before. From these data, the researchers calculated the true terrain of the moon and learned about its actual shape. The past measurements were hampered by the roughness of the lunar rock surface.
Researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, said that the moon does not appear spherical, probably due to gravity when the moon is young. The gravitational force between the Earth and the Moon creates friction inside the Moon, causing it to deform, presenting the shape. After that, the moon's orbit gradually becomes larger and its gravitational force decreases, but the shape of the moon no longer remains.
