It is reported that Volvo's new engine family, the VEA (Volvo Engine Series) , has been officially put into production. The engine is produced by Volvo Sweden's Skvde plant and will be equipped with Volvo models in autumn 2013.
Prior to this, Volvo stated that the first engine of the VEA project was a four-cylinder diesel engine equipped with a "revolutionary" direct injection system. Unlike most diesel direct injection systems, which rely on a single oil pressure sensor, the Volvo i-ART injection system reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, while effectively increasing performance. The new i-ART technology can accept the feedback of the oil pressure of each fuel injector. The data is analyzed by a microcomputer and the fuel flow is adjusted accordingly.
Volvo's vice president, Derek Crabb, promised that the new four-cylinder engine will have higher performance than today's six-cylinder engine and also consume less fuel than current four-cylinder engines.
To further achieve high production efficiency, Volvo will combine the VEA and Flywheel Kinetic Energy Recovery System (FlywheelKERS) to create a new four-cylinder engine. Tests have shown that the prototype version system can improve the city's fuel efficiency by 25% and the power can be increased by 80 horsepower. Crabb's remarks have been fully confirmed, VEA will face the elimination of V8 engine.
