EPA requires an auto company to remove materials contaminated by PCB

The US Environmental Protection Agency issued an order to require a major automobile company to remove materials and soil contaminated by PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls). The company plans to dismantle some PCB-contaminated buildings near this site, and PCBs will have a significant negative impact on human health and the environment.

According to the requirements of the order, the company will be responsible for additional sampling work, construction demolition, pollution purification, removal of soil contaminated by PCBs and reconstruction work in this area. The EPA will oversee the implementation of this action to ensure that any PCB-containing material and soil can be properly disposed of to meet federal and state regulatory requirements.

PCBs were banned by Congress in 1976 and have been shown to have a number of negative health effects, such as causing cancer in animals. The EPA classifies it as a carcinogen that may cause cancer in humans. In addition, PCBs may affect the immune, reproductive, neurological and endocrine systems and other health effects.
