Eaton introduced the Fuller Advantage series of heavy-duty transmissions with many new design features, including lighter weight and higher efficiency, which not only improves fuel economy and shift feel, but also reduces preventive maintenance costs. This new 10-speed gearbox series is scheduled to enter commercial production in September this year.
Fuller Advantage series transmissions include both manual and automatic designs, and automatic transmissions are scheduled for mass production in the first quarter of 2014.
Jeff Walker, Eaton’s global product controller for manual gearboxes, stated: “By broadly adopting customer opinions, Eaton is putting Fuler’s Advantage series transmissions on the market in accordance with customer needs and expectations, consolidating our leading position in the field of commercial vehicle transmissions in the North American market. The products introduced will be mainly aimed at customers who provide long-distance transportation and regional transportation services. The Fuller Advantage series transmission also includes upgraded versions with excellent performance, high reliability, and low maintenance cost."
The new precision lubrication system in the Fuller transmission is the most important technological upgrade highlight of the new transmission. The system reduced the oil loss common to conventional gearboxes by nearly 33%. Due to the reduced heat generation, the Fuller Advantage series gearboxes do not require the use of coolers and corresponding piping and fittings. As a result, preventive maintenance and engine fan rotation times have decreased, further reducing horsepower requirements.
The weight of the new Fuller Advantage series gearbox is also greatly reduced. Although the total weight was reduced by 75 pounds, it did not have any effect on the strength. The new product uses aluminum materials instead of cast iron as the transmission top cover, the sub-tank housing and various types of cylinder blocks. Since the weight of the coolers provided by suppliers varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, the exact weight reduction depends on the truck brand purchased.
Thanks to increased efficiency and reduced weight, the new gearbox also helps improve the overall fuel economy of the vehicle. Initial vehicle and third-party test results show that fuel economy can be increased by up to 1.9% compared to similar gearboxes.
Customers of the Fuller Advantage series gearbox are also expected to reduce maintenance costs. The series is equipped with an oil detection mirror, allowing customers to carry out daily checks on the amount of oil without spending too much time. In addition, the precision lubrication system requires only 16 pints of oil, which is nearly half the amount of oil used in similar gearboxes.
Walker added: "These new transmissions have improved efficiency, reduced weight, reduced maintenance, and excellent reliability, resulting in a significant increase in fuel economy, which is absolutely beneficial to the profitability of our customers."
Other technical aspects of the Fuller Advantage series include:
Commercial vehicle gross vehicle weight (GCW) rating of 80,000 pounds (without oil cooler), the product can be expanded to 110,000 pounds after the market.
The torque capacity is from 950 (1,288 Nm) to 1,850 lb./ft. (2508 Nm).
Standard 8 bolt (bottom) and 6 bolt (side) PTO interfaces.
Optional through shaft PTO.
Ten forward gears (direct and overspeed) and two reverse gears.
Walker said: "Of course, we have also considered for professional drivers. They will have a new and easy shift feeling, and we are deeply praised by the driver's 13-speed or 18-speed gearbox 3-track operation." The product will contain 17 new manual specifications, with speed ratios ranging between 15.42 and 17.53.
