With the application of embedded modems, telematics devices, and wireless connectivity, more and more cars are beginning to have wireless networking capabilities. However, in-car facilities such as sensors, cameras, and calculation and control units are still connected through complicated cable wiring. The use of wireless power systems can greatly simplify the use of cables, optimize vehicle design, and make more onboard functionality possible.
Less car cable
In-vehicle information processing equipment, sensors, and other types of in-vehicle instrumentation usually each require two power cables and two data cables.
The use of the wireless power system will greatly reduce the cables required for the connection of in-vehicle devices, and all on-board devices can be connected using only one cable that combines the functions of data and power and penetrates the body. The wireless transmission of electrical energy mainly relies on resonant electromagnetic induction, which can transmit power and data information with a frequency of 50mW and 1 kilowatt.
GM recently announced that it will provide wireless charging devices in its models for charging mobile devices in the car.
In addition to simplifying the use of cables, wireless power systems will also bring other improvements, such as reducing material production and assembly costs, making it possible for more flexible and effective vehicle design.
More flexible design
The single-vehicle cable system brought by wireless power will allow automakers to enjoy greater flexibility in the design of body electrical facilities and body construction, and will enable more on-board functionality.
For example, under the support of the system, the door can be freed from the obligation to support complicated cables, and the rear-seat display does not have to be connected to the on-board operator interface, and the movable position such as the front seat or the headrest can also be moved more flexibly. In addition, when a towing service is required, a car equipped with wireless power does not have to rely on a cable with a signal plug to connect to the trailer.
Possible challenges
There are some unavoidable challenges in applying automotive wireless power. For example, car manufacturers need to modify some of the car's components and equipment to make it suitable for wireless power systems, and this process may take several years.
Before wireless power is fully promoted, car manufacturers may be able to first try independent subsystems such as parking aids that are more suitable for wireless power connections.
