DOC and EPA propose the first national standard for greenhouse gases and fuel efficiency for trucks and buses

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Transportation (DOC) recently announced the first national standard for reducing the emission of greenhouse gases and improving fuel efficiency for heavy goods vehicles and passenger cars.

The first five-year plan for this comprehensive national standard achieves a reduction of 25 million metric tons of greenhouse gases and 50 million barrels of oil.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the EPA and DOT makes requirements for three types of heavy trucks: combination tractors, heavy trucks and vans, and professional vehicles. Manufacturers' classification of production models is the primary problem to be solved.

NHTSA and EPA expect that the heavy-duty truck country plan will obtain a net income of 41 billion US dollars from the model's vehicle life cycle between 2014 and 2018. The innovative technology of the plan will also generate economic benefits, consolidate energy security and improve air quality. New technologies include extensive improvements in aerodynamics and tire rolling resistance, as well as engine and transmission upgrades.

After the standard was published in the Federal Register, the EPA and DOT will conduct a 60-day review. As part of this plan, NHTSA has prepared to draft an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed fuel efficiency standards.
