Linear Technology Corporation introduces the two-wire bus multiplexers LTC4305 and LTC4306, which provide capacitive isolation when the upstream I2C bus is connected to the desired downstream bus combination. The software-controlled LTC4305 multiplexes two channels, while the LTC4306 splits the I2C bus into four sub-branches. I2C multiplexing allows reliable switching of multiple system management buses and multiple I2C devices. Multiplexing also allows for address expansion and addressing of one of several identical devices, thus addressing address conflict issues. These devices can be used in a variety of computers, including workstations, servers, and desktop PCs.
Many I2C and SMBus devices operate at different voltages and are therefore limited on shared common buses. The LTC4305 and LTC4306 are unrestricted by the power supply, so each channel can be pulled up to a supply voltage of 2.2V to 5.5V, regardless of the supply voltage of the IC. This level shifting can be done without a second power supply pin or a second pair of input pull-up resistors. Two (LTC4305) and four (LTC4306) Alert inputs for fault reporting provide downstream channels. If a blocking bus is detected, an optional programmable timeout circuit will automatically interrupt the data and the clock bus connection will be enabled.
Both the SDA and SCL pins of both integrated circuits have ±10kV ESD protection for ruggedness. When activated, the rise time accelerator circuit will supply current to the two-wire bus pins to reduce the rise time. Each integrated circuit allows the use of 27 different bus addresses, which can be configured with three tri-state address pins. The LTC4306 also features two general purpose input/output (GPIO) pins that can be configured as inputs, open-drain outputs, or push-pull outputs.
The LTC4305 is available in 16-lead SSOP and 4mm x 5mm DFN packages. The LTC4306 is available in 24-lead SSOP and 4mm x 5mm QFN packages. The LTC4305/LTC4306 are available in commercial and industrial temperature range versions and are available in 1,000-piece quantities starting at $2.80 each.
