The 5G technology that has received much attention, let us see what is being done abroad.

Singtel and Ericsson are preparing to launch Singapore Telecom's pilot 5G network later this year, which will promote the city's drone and autonomous vehicle trials. The project is expected to be operational in the fourth quarter and the pilot network will be deployed in Singapore's science, business and IT center, One-North, Buona Vista.

The announcement is also the result of a joint facility between Singtel and Ericsson to promote the development of 5G in the country.

The next generation of mobile networks has been touted to provide speeds that are 10 times faster than average 4G rates, and to enable 4K video downloads "within a few seconds."

Singtel's chief technology officer Mark Chong said in a statement on Monday: "5G is likely to accelerate the digital transformation of the industry and provide innovative applications for consumers."

SingTel and Ericsson said they will test drones and autonomous vehicles on the 5G test network later this year at One-North and other areas designated for such testing.

At the press conference on Monday, both vendors demonstrated a demonstration of streaming 3D augmented reality content over the network, which runs in the 28GHz millimeter-wave spectrum. Participants are able to view virtual objects such as human anatomy and 360-degree images, which are then streamed remotely to external audiences over a 5G network.

Other telecom companies in Singapore have also begun their own 5G network trials. In June, M1 said that it has cooperated with Huawei to test on the 28GHz millimeter wave spectrum, and StarHub said last year that it is also cooperating with Huawei for 5G network test.

Previously, the industry regulator Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) announced in May 2017 that it plans to allow Singapore Telecom to test 5G services for free within two years as part of its efforts to promote local development. According to IMDA data, the frequency of the 5G trial was exempted until December 2019, which saved the telecommunications company $11,200 per year.
