China's Overseas Oil Search Adds Three Projects to Existing Overseas Projects

(Reporter Feng Weili) When the international crude oil price almost equaled the US$60 per barrel mark, on June 22, the reporter confirmed a good news from the China National Petroleum Corporation’s International Division: In the most recent period, PetroChina and The Oman and UAE in the Middle East signed a memorandum of understanding on oil and gas cooperation. In mid-June, CNPC signed an agreement with the Uzbekistan National Oil and Gas Company to form a joint venture and jointly develop Ukrainian oil and gas resources.

According to the person in charge of the International Business Department of PetroChina, in the plan to implement oil search in two markets in recent years, PetroChina has stepped up its pace at an unprecedented speed. On June 12th, PetroChina signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation with Oman Oil Company, a petroleum company in the Gulf countries; on the following day, it will further cooperate with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company in the UAE.
It is understood that in order to spread the risk of imports, China has continuously strengthened cooperation with Central Asia, Russia, Kazakhstan and other "old relations." At the end of May, during the Uzbek President’s visit to China, PetroChina and Uzbek Oil and Gas Corporation decided to establish a joint venture with an initial registered capital of 96 million U.S. dollars to jointly develop Ukrainian oil and gas resources. In addition, the Export-Import Bank of China also plans to provide a loan of US$ 385 million to Ukrainian Petrochemical Corporation from 2005 to 2007 to ensure the implementation of the 12 Sino-Ukraine oil and gas cooperation projects.

It is gratifying to note that in the process of actively seeking overseas cooperation, China's established oil projects overseas have adopted new technologies and new processes to increase oil recovery, which has greatly increased the output of overseas crude oil. The passive rift basin oil and gas exploration theory and exploration supporting technologies, as well as the application of fine reservoir description techniques, can increase the daily output of a single well from the initial dozens of tons to 500 tons to 800 tons. Last year alone, CNPC’s overseas crude oil output reached 30.11 million tons, which was several million tons higher than the same period last year.

It is understood that in the current oil import pattern in China, the Middle East accounts for 50%, Africa 25%, Asia-Pacific 15%, and Central Asia and Russia 10%.
