It is expected that the pilot plant will be built next year, and the 10,000-ton industrial production plant will be built in 2015, five years ahead of schedule.
The Chinese Academy of Sciences and Sinopec reached an alliance in 2009 to initiate the development of microalgae biodiesel technology. In the research division of labor, the Chinese Academy of Sciences mainly studies the development of upstream algae species and reactors, and Sinopec focuses on microalgae harvesting, algal oil extraction, and industrial application research.
Microalgae is one of the original plants with the highest photosynthetic efficiency. Compared with corn, soybeans and other crops, the oil yield per unit area can be several dozen times higher. The microalgae biodiesel technology firstly includes screening and cultivation of microalgae, obtaining high-oily algae species with excellent traits, and then absorbing sunlight, carbon dioxide, etc. in a photobioreactor to generate microalgal biomass, and finally recovering and processing. It is converted to microalgae biodiesel.
According to reports, the current price of diesel is about 7,000 yuan per ton. According to the current research speed, the cost of microalgae biodiesel can be reduced to below 6,500 yuan per ton in the next three to five years.
