According to the statistics of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, since 2007, the transmission has become the highest value imported automobile component in China. The body accessories/parts and engine parts are the second and third largest auto parts. From 2008, 2009 and to January-April 2010, China’s three largest categories of automotive components with the highest import value were transmission system components, body accessories, and engine components. Similar to the situation in 2007.
According to the statistics of Shanghai and Qingdao Customs, the highest import value of auto parts in Shanghai Customs District from January to May 2010 was the use of automatic shift transmissions and parts for cars, with an import value of US$420 million, an increase of 1.9 times; 2010 -In April, the highest import value of auto parts at the Shandong Port was "motorized vehicle transmissions," with an import value of 26.21 million U.S. dollars, an increase of 1.2 times.
It is not difficult to see from the above data that the gearbox and its components have become the largest category of Chinese auto parts import requirements. Behind the demand for such parts and components is the increasing demand for various types of automatic transmissions in the Chinese automotive market and the lower level of localization of these higher-tech gearboxes (compared to engines and manual transmissions, etc.).
The automatic transmission is currently mainly used in the field of passenger vehicles (although AMT and other automatic transmissions have begun to be applied to commercial vehicles). According to data collected by Fourin CATARC and China General Administration of Customs, the assembly rate of AT- and CVT-based automatic transmissions in China's passenger vehicle market has increased from less than 32% in 2004 to 39% in 2008.
However, the production of these automatic transmissions mainly depends on imports. The import volume of passenger car automatic transmissions in China has increased from 587,000 units in 2004 to 1.89 million units in 2008, and imports accounted for 86.5% of the total production volume.
Although more and more automatic transmission projects have been invested since 2008 (including overseas acquisitions), some have been put into production this year, such as Chery’s CVT project, Geely’s acquisition of Australian DSI transmission project, and Volkswagen DSG transmission project. , Which will gradually increase the localization rate of automatic transmissions and their parts. However, in the short term, the transmission and its parts will still be the largest category of auto parts imported by China.
