Maoming ethylene equipment was struck by lightning and exploded

At around 18:25 on June 3, the ethylene division of Sinopec Maoming Branch was damaged by lightning, and the sky was filled with fire and smoke, thousands of people were evacuated. The fire was controlled at 21 o'clock that night. It is understood that the preliminary cause of the explosion was caused by a lightning strike on the ethylene cracker.

Recently, heavy rains hit Guangdong. On the evening of the 3rd, Maoming City encountered heavy rain and lightning. At 18:25, the No. 2 furnace of the ethylene cracker in the Maoming Ethylene Plant exploded suddenly during the heavy rain. A flame of 50 meters was picked up and the sky was covered with thick smoke. After the incident, local emergency dispatched more than 10 fire engines and a large number of personnel to fight. Thousands of people living around the factory area were evacuated to safety. The fire was controlled at 21 that night. At the time of the press release at 18:00 on the 4th, the related departments had not announced the casualties and specific losses to the public. The ethylene production equipment had all been discontinued.

The Maoming Petrochemical District is the nearest industrial park to the Maoming Ethylene Plant Area where the explosion occurred. The production facilities in the Park are not damaged and are operating normally. However, it is not known whether the raw materials supplied to the Maoming Ethylene Division will be interrupted for a long period of time. Maoming Ethylene has not notified relevant companies of the supply of relevant materials for the time being.

According to a responsible person of Maoming Ethylene, after nearly three consecutive hours of hard work, the fire was controlled at 21 o'clock that night. The specific reasons for the explosion have yet to be further investigated.
