What is the basic principle of solvent extraction?

Solvent extraction is based on an organic solvent having a different dissolution for different metal ions of the metal ions in solution and therefore may be enriched and separated. Cu ²⁺ (aqueous phase) + 2RH (organic phase) == CuR (organic phase) + 2H ⁺ (aqueous phase)

The above reaction is reversible. In a weakly acidic medium, the reaction proceeds to the right, that is, the extraction reaction, because the metal chelate formed by the reaction has good stability. In a strongly acidic medium, the above reaction proceeds to the left, that is, the metal ion of the complex will be transferred from the organic phase to the aqueous phase, and the organic phase can be regenerated. This is called a "back extraction" reaction. The copper sulfate solution obtained by back extraction contains a relatively high concentration of copper ions, and the copper-rich solution is electrowinned to obtain an electric copper product having a higher purity.
